1997 World Championships

Report:

Team Prelims:
Khorkina did wonderfully here. She qualified first to the All-around
as well as in 3 event finals namely VT, UB, and BB. She stepped out
of bounds on floor to score only a 9.637 and therefore did not qualify
to the floor finals.

Team Finals:
Khorkina again placed first in the AA. She performed cleanly and beutifully
on all events to help Russia win the silver medal.

AA Finals:
She started on the beam and wobbled big time while performing
a full-twisting backhandspring and only started from a 9.8 SV therefore
receiving only a 9.562. She was in 6th place after the 1st rotation.
In floor, her second event, she made an error in her 2.5 twist punch front
combination and received a 9.675 but that score was enough
to put her in first place after 2 rotations. In VT, probably her weakest event,
she took a step on both vaults and her yurchenko 1.5 was low in landing,
she only averaged a 9.549. She was in fourth after three roations and
she will end on her best and favorite apparatus, the bars. She did the most
intricate work on the UB and stuck the landing. A 9.850! she won
her first world AA gold.

EF:
VT: she only took one vault and finished 8th
UB: She struck gold with a 9.875
BB: She did a beautiful beam routine but finished only second
FX: nice tumbling and choreography, she actually tied for
first place but a lower prelims score put her in second.
